Lock-In!!!

The chapter lock-in is for all members. The jam packed night will be full of fun, games, leadership, and food. Join us on the 4th to the 5th. The doors open at 9:30pm on the 4th and will close at 10pm. The activities will end at 6:15am on the 5th. Please bring you permission slip and $5 to the ag room by Friday!!

Midland Agriculture Comunications Team to Host Wind Farm Forum.

The Midland High School Agriculture Communications Team will be holding a forum for the local community for anyone interested in the local Camp Grove Wind Farms. The forum will be on November 16th at 6:30 P.M. at the Marshall-Putnam Farm Bureau in Henry,IL. Please attend!



Ag Science CDE

The Ag Science members won state on November 6th. The individual placings are as follows; Mallory Blunier placed 3rd, Taylor Streitmatter placed 4th, Courtney Van Dyke placed 9th, and Mark Girone placed 20th. They will be going to compete at the next National Convention in October. Congrads and Good Luck!

November Chapter Meeting

The Chapter meeting is at 6:00pm on November 11th. We will be serving chilli, chicken and rice soup, crackers, chesse, and some sort of dessert. There is an officer meeting at 5:00pm. After the Chapter meeting there will be the Greenhand officer elections (Greenhands that turned in a form please be present). There will be a Ag in the Classroom meeting with Julie Reed at 7:00pm. If you are on the committie you need to be present to do Ag in the classroom Friday.

Horse Judging Team going to Nationals!

The horse judging team has received their scores. They are held first place in State and will now be proceeding to Nationals! Congrats LeRoy, Ashley, Austin! The other participants, Mark, Mallory, Hannah, and Kaliea.

For all members, our first chapter meeting is Tuesday, September 21st. Officer's meeting at 5 and Chapter meeting will begin at 6. We will be having pulled pork, chips and desert! Members please arrive on time. Committee meetings will be held at the meeting. As well as, Ag Issues and Ag Com will have practice prior to the meeting.

Election Time is here!

The chapter offier elections will be done through an interview process this yeat.  The Application deadline is April 1st.  Download a form from the forms section and get it into Mr. B by April 1.  Interviews will be held on April 8th at the high school at 6:30 pm.  Once all applications are collected, interview times will be scheduled.  New officers will be announced at the April 12th FFA meeting.

Congrats to the Midland FFA Ag Issues team, Mallory Blunier, James Dumphy, Make Girone, Liz, Koehlor,  Silver Mitchell, Carlie Topper, Hanz, Vik. The team went to WIU, in Macomb to compeat in the state ag issues CDE, they did MIdland proud and return home with a first in state title. Amazing job team, we knew you could do it. Good Luck at National next Oct!

Section 5 Parli Pro

Good Job to the Midland Parli Pro team members, the team took first in the section five CDE this year. Drew Herrige places as first chairperson, Rebecca Crank was first secretary. Cheyenne Kargol placed as 2nd top floor member, Nikki Kargol placed as third, Katharine Girone placed as sixth floor member, Rebecca placed at seventh, and Coral Johnson placed as eight floor member. Good job team, and good luck in Dist Parli Pro.

Fruit sales

A Big congrats to our chapter's Ag Sales team. The team compeated at state contest and WON!! The team was Coral Johnson who placed 2nd in Sales Call, Sondra Monier who placed 2nd in Customer Service, Liz Kohler who placed 4th in prospecting for new customers, Drew Herridge placed 3nd in customer relations, and Cheyenne Kargol who placed 2nd in Host Choice which was Prospectiong for new customer. GOOD JOB TEAM!!!!!!!!!!!

Food Science team placed 2nd at state

Good Job to the Food Science team girls, This year they placed 2nd at state contest! The contest involved a group project, a test. Also a tasting triangle, photo hazards, aromas, and a complant letter. The members were Kathraine Girone who placed 3rd at state, Cheyenne Kargol who palced 11th, Mallory Blunier who was 12th, and Kelsey who was 13th. Good job girls!

Soils Judging team win STATE!!!!!!

Good Job to our very own soils judging (land use) team!! They won state CDE this year!! The members includes Jeff Fandel who placed 2nd at state, Mark Girone who placed 3rd. Other members were Mallory Blunier, and Eli Kohler. Good job guys, way to go!!!

Good Job to the Ag sales team, who won section and district. All members walked away with a 1st in their areas, the even included a test, and team project, and their areas. Chicago students come and see Midland

40 students from Chicago came to Midland this week. They were all greeted with a porkchop lunch. The officer team intoduce rual living and central IL agriculture to them. They play triva games, and mock CDE with them. They officers had a great time getting to know they way these kids live to.

Agriculture Extravaganza

This year's Agriculture Extravaganza is open to all third grade students in the Marshall-Putnam County Area. There will be over ten differnent agriculture presentations, varying from a Soil Erosion presentation to "The Treasures of the Counties". Members who have signed up for this event will be both group leaders and teacher's assistants. This will be a great opportunity for members to gain leadership skills within the communty while teaching the younger students about agriculture literacy. If you haven't already be sure to sign up for this even in the Agriculture Room 201, you don't want to miss out on this opportunity!

Labor Auction

This years annual FFA Labor Auction was held on March 17, 2008. Thanks to the hard workers in our FFA Chapter, Midland hit an all time high! We acquired $800 more than last year! The meal was Rib-Eye Steak/Porkchop, Baked Beans, Potato Salad, Chips, and Cake. Special thank-you's go out to our Alumni members and to everyone else who donated their time and money into this event! The auction money will be very beneficial for our Chapter!

Midland High School is currently seeking applicants for the part-time Agriculture Education Internship for the 2009-2010 school year. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for those seeking a career in agricultural education to work within a successful agriculture classroom and competitive FFA program. This year the Midland FFA Public Speakers are ALL going to the District Contest. Samantha Dunphy took first in Senior Prepaired. Cheyenne Kargol took second in Senior Extempt. Nikki Kargol took first in Junior Extempt. Mark Girone took first in Creed.

Midland FFA Does Their Part in National FFA Week!

This year's National FFA Week Activities at Midland were a big success and a lot of fun! Tons of students and members participated in the dress up days throughout the week. The free pork chop meal for members and staff on Tuesday. The first annual Midland FFA Week Breakfast Meeting was on Thursday!

The FFA Week committee and a few officers went to the Jr. High to give an FFA presentation to the 7th and 8th graders onFriday. They encouraged the students to join up by showing them how much fun FFA is!! They played leadership games and showed a slide show full of pictures from the past year, as well as talked about the impact FFA has had on their high school careers so far.

The High School FFA Assembly on Monday was a great way so start the Nationa FFA week.

Overall, it was a great FFA Week, and the entire school had a lot of fun. Thanks again to everyone who participated and showed their Midland FFA pride!!!



Section 5 Lock-In

The section 5 Lock-in is on March 7th -8th at the Peoria RiverPlex. The lock-in is a fun way to meet members from across the section. At the lock-in members will be playing leadership and teambuilding games along with the members from other schools and section officers. There will also be a few hours of free time to swim, play volleyball, basketball, dodgeball, and many more fun activities.

Please be sure to get a permission slip in the ag room, they are due back on February 26.



FFA week

FFA week is the third week of February and it is coming up soon. Be sure to listen to the anouncements for theme days. The chapter officers will be handing our FFA pencils to members and having school assmebly on Monday, Tuesday is the pork chop lunch which is free to all members wearing  blue and gold, and Thursday is our first breakfast meeting. Be sure to be involved in the fun. Check the ag room and listen to the anouncements for any news on FFA Week.

November Meeting

The November meeting was a success, with 50 members present. All members who came to the November meeting can come to the December meeting for free! After the meeting the Greenhands ellected their officers. The offices are as follows, President- Mallory Blunier, Vice-President- James Dunphy, Reporter- Kelsey Crank, Secretary- Mark Girone, Treasurer- Olivia Steffen, and Sentinel- Silver Mitchell. The December meeting is coming up on December 16.

81st National FFA Convention

This year 18 members had the opportunity to go to Indianapolis, Indian for the 81st National FFA Convention. Along with the  convention, the members went on tours of both a buffalo and elk farm and the Indiana Downs racetrack. The state winning Ag Issues team also conpeated and was awarded Silver.

Midland Ends Year with Chapter Banquet!!!

The Midland FFA Chapter Banquet was held on May 13th, 2008 in the gymnasium at the high school. The turn out for the annual event was a huge success- over 40 members and 162 parents and guests attended!!!!! The banquet was a potluck style meal, with each family bringing two dishes to share. After dinner, awards and recognitions were made to the people who have supported us throughout this entire year!

Thank you to everyone who has supported us in our success for 2007-2008! WIthout you, this amazing year would not have been possible!!!!!!!!!!

Members help out at Spring Planting Days!

EIght FFA members helped out with setting up for the "Spring Planting Days" at Three Sister's Park in Chillicothe on Monday, April 28, 2008. During the day, members were able to help organize projects about how farming was done in the year 1918. 7th grade students from all around the community will be able to participate in these activities. Members also had the chance to use real equipment and tools that farmers would've used 90 years ago to plant their land during the springtime. It was a fun and educational morning!



Member compete at the Section Livestock and Dairy Contest!

Members participated in the Section Livestock and Dairy CDE Tuesday, April 22nd. The livestock team placed classes of different breeds of livestock animals. They placed 7th overall. The dairy team placed classes of dairy cows, and placed 2nd overall. Congratulations to both teams, and good luck as they compete at the State Contest on Super Tuesday!

Members compete at Lincolnland Livestock Invitational

Nine members competed at the Lincolnland Livestock Invititational on Friday, March 28th. The members judged rings of cattle, swine, and sheep. It was a great practice for the section contest coming up later on April!

Midland Hosts PQA

(03/31/2008)
The Midland Ag Ed Department hosted the Pork Quality Assurance program on Thursday, March 27th. Twelve students showed for the training, as well as their parents. Mr. Blunier gave an introduction to the program, and then Dr. McCully spoke about different issues that the pork industry is facing. Emily Bogner then did a fun activity with the students dealing with residues of medication in swine today. It was a great turnout, and the students walked away with a lot of information for their swine projects.

Poultry Team competes at Section and State Contests

The Poultry team competed at the Section Poultry contest held at the high school on March 13th. The members judged rings on exterior and interior egg grading, carton placing, live bird placing, market bird grading, and patty evaluation. There were four teams at the section contest, and Midland placed first overall! Team members placed individually-

Michael Giugler- 6th place
Sam Dunphy- 9th place

Congratulations to the team! They also competed at the State CDE on Saturday, March 15th. Results will be posted as soon as they arrive! :)



FFA/Alumni Labor Auction a Huge Success!

The annual Midland FFA and Alumni Labor Auction was held on Tuesday, March 18th in the high school cafeteria.  The alumni sold pork chop and rib eye dinners to everyone, and members being auctioned ate for free! There were 50 members who were auctioned for an 8 hour workday. 46 members of the community showed up to support the auction. Overall, it was the best year that the chapter has ever seen, bringing in over $5800 for the chapter's Alumni!!! Thanks again to everyone who supported the auction!!!

Members compete at the Section/District Ag Sales Contest!

Midland FFA members competed at the Section and Distrcit Ag Sales Contest on Tuesday, March 11th at Blackhawk East College. Team members completed a test and team question before they broke off into their own individual area. The team placed 1st at Section overall and 3rd at District. Team members were:

Meats team places at State Contest!

The Midland Meats Judging team was SIXTH PLACE at the State Contest at U of I  on Saturday, March 1st, 2008!! The team was judged on how well they placed beef, pork, and lamb carcasses, as well as yield and quality grading and parts ID. Team members were Michael Giugler, Emily Bogner, Quinn Steffen, Brian Giugler, and Cody Blunier! Congratulations to the team!!!

Poultry Judging Workshop held at Midland

The Midland FFA presented a poultry judging workshop on Thursday, March 6th, 2008 at the high school. FFA team members and 4-Hers were invited to the event. Everyone attending learned about the Poultry Contest being held next week, and then learned how to interior and exterior grade eggs, identify chicken parts, market grading, and placing rings. Members attend State Ag Legislative Day

Eight members attended the State Ag Legislative Day on Thursday, March 6th, 2008 in Springfield, IL. Members had the chance to help fill baskets and lunches for all of the legislators to help spread ag awareness around our state. Then, members had the opportunity of meeting with David Leitch and speaking with him on agriculture issues in our community.

Public Speaking and Greenhand Quizbowl

The Section 5 Public Speaking Contest and Greenhand Quizbowl was held on Thursday, February 28th, 2008 at Elmwood High School. Samantha Dunphy placed 2nd in Extemp. speaking,  Emily Bogner placed 3rd in Prepared speaking, Mitch Dunphy placed 7th in Creed Speaking,and the Greenhands got 4th place overall in the quizbowl competition. Congratulations to all of the members who competed and placed at the contest!!!!

Meats Judging Team places 2nd at Section

The Meats Team placed 2nd overall at the Section 5 contest at Eureka Locker on Tuesday, February 26th! The team judged retail cuts of beef and pork, as well as beef and pork carcasses, yield grading, and quality grading. Team members were: Michael Giugler (2nd place overall), Quinn Steffen (5th place overall), Emily Bogner (6th place overall), Cody Blunier, and Brian Giugler. Congrats to the team and good luck at the state contest on Saturday, March 1st!

National FFA Week at Midland!

This year's National FFA Week Activities at Midland were a big success and a lot of fun! Tons of students and members participated in the dress up days throughout the week. The free pork chop meal for members and staff on Wednesday was delicious and everyone loved it! On Thursday, we lined the back row of the parking lot with pick-up trucks, and a few tractors even showed up on Friday morning for "Drive Your Tractor To School Day".

The FFA Week committee and a few officers went to the Jr. High to give an FFA presentation to the 7th and 8th graders. They encouraged the students to join up by showing them how much fun FFA is!! They played leadership games and showed a slide show full of pictures from the past year, as well as talked about the impact FFA has had on their high school careers so far.

The High School FFA Assembly on Friday was a great way to end the week. Emily, Chrissy, Michael, and Jay started off with a big thank-you for the school for participating in the activities. Each of the members was then announced and received an FFA power clap while they came down to be recogonized by the entire school. Then, the four officers had a drawing, and two members from each class got a prize of $10 each!! Afterwards, Mr. B recognized all of our state competing teams- Soils (5th), Dairy (2nd), and our State Winning Ag Issues team!! He presented the team with their 1st place plaque as they were recognized by the students and staff!

Overall, it was a great FFA Week, and the entire school had a lot of fun. Thanks again to everyone who participated and showed their Midland FFA pride!!!



AG ISSUES TEAM WINS STATE--HEADED TO NATIONALS IN THE FALL!!

The Agriculture Issues team placed 1ST AT THE STATE CONTEST ON SATURDAY FEBRUARY 9TH, 2008 in Macomb, IL at Western Illinois University in Knoblauch Hall!!! Team members presented their issue debate about Wind Farms in Camp Grove and wind energy as a whole. The team is extremely excited that their hard work payed off! Membmers went down to WIU on Friday night to get some extra practice sessions in before the contest, eat some pizza, and then get some "Pep Rally" ice cream. They then competed at 12:15 on Saturday afternoon. After their 15 minute presentation, the team members answered 12 minutes worth of questions on their research, portfolio, opinions, and presentation.

After an extremely long van ride home, the team arrived back at the high school to receive the long-awaited "phone call results" in the form of an email. The team swept past the 9 other teams (2 per District) to finish 1st at the contest!!! CONGRATULATIONS TO THE ENTIRE TEAM for their hard work and dedication, and keep up the good work following up to the National Contest in Indy, IN at National Convention. Make sure to check out the site next October when we annouce them as our National Winners!!!!

Team members again are -- Emily (Moderator), Sam, Becca, Coral, Chey, Katharine, Nikki, and their coach Mr. B!!!! They will be the first members to participate at a National CDE in the history of the Midland FFA Chapter!!!!!



Ag Issues Team Presents to School Board

The Ag Issues team presented their debate on the Camp Grove Wind Farm to the school board members and people attending the meeting on Monday, January 28th. The forum was a great success and was well received by many in the audience. The team has two more public presentations to make before the State Contest on the 8th and 9th of February. Good luck to the team and keep up the good work!!

Congratulations go out to the four State Degree applicants that were approved to receive their degree! Emily Bogner, Chrissy Irelan, Rachel Giosta, and Michael Giugler all were interviewed on Saturday by a panel of Ag teachers from around the section. They were asked questions on their SAEPs, as well as their knowledge of FFA. Great job again to our members!!!

State Degree Candidates and Record Book Interviews

The candidates for the Illinois State Degree from our chapter are Michael Giugler, Rachel Giosta, Chrissy Irelan, and Emily Bogner. The members have been working hard on their record books and degree applications. Interviews are on Saturday morning. Wish all the applicants luck!

Members have also been working on their record books for Section Interviews on Saturday the 2nd of February. There are two record book nights to work on your SAE if needed this week on Thursday and Friday night after school. Come down to the Ag Room if you need help!!!



Made For Excellence Conference!

Eight Greenhand members attended the 2008 MFE Conference on  January 18th and 19th. Members attended were David Webber, Cody Blunier, Brian Giugler, Mitch Dunphy, Ashley Adams, Liz Koehler, Nikki Kargol, and Sierra Lishman. The Greenhands attended team sessions and a dance on Friday night. All of the members had a great time!!!



Parliamentary Procedure Team Rocks Out at District!!

The Parliamentary Procedure Team placed 3rd overall at the District Contest in Amboy on Wednesday, January 16th!! Becca Crank placed as 5th place Secretary, Chrissy Irelan placed as the 7th floormember, and Emily Bogner was 4th place Chairperson. There were 9 teams competing at the contest. The team is ranked in the Top 15 in the state! Congratulations to the team for their hard work paid off!!!!!

January FFA Meeting

The January FFA Meeting was on January 15th in the cafeteria. Members ate hot wings before the meeting started and got very messy in the process. The Ag Issues team gave their presentation on the Wind Farm in Camp Grove. There were committee reports and upcoming dates announced. Over 40 members attended!!!! ATTN: All meeting agendas are now posted in the Ag Room on the bulletin board from the day after until the next meeting!!!

Ag Issues Team Heating Up with Forums

The Ag Issues Team this year is Becca Crank, Coral Johnson, Nikki Kargol, Sam Dunphy, Katharine Girone, Chey Kargol, and Emily Bogner. The team has been practicing very hard the past month researching their issue and memorizing their script for the State Ag Issues contest on February 8th and 9th. The issue they are presenting is about the Camp Grove Wind Farm in Camp Grove near Sparland. So far, they have presented five public forums needed for their portfolio for state. These include the Ag Council/Alumni, Varna Women's Club, Lacon City Council, Farm Bureau, and the Midland FFA Chapter Meeting. They have three forums left before the State Contest. The team is hoping for the state win and to move onto Nationals in Indy, IN this fall. Wish them luck!!!!

Fruit Fundraiser Sets Record Sales!!!

This year's fruit fundraiser topped all past sales with a record of almost $12,000 in sales!!! The fundraiser was a huge success! Thanks to everyone who sold!!! And members, don't forget- you must turn in all of your money before you get your 10% commission back!!!!

December Meeting and Pizza Party!!!

Sixty members attended the December Chapter meeting and pizza party! We watched the movie "National Treasure" projected on the shop wall and ate pizza to our hearts' content!!!! It was a great turn-out and the members had a lot of fun!

Members participate in Section Parliamentary Procedure Contest

Emily, Rebecca, Sam, Chrissy, Katharine, and Cheyenne all participated in the Section Parli Pro contest on Monday, December 3rd at Metamora. They had a great session and placed 2nd place overall. Becca was 2nd place Secretary, and Chrissy was 5th place Floormember. The team will advance on to the District contest in January. Good luck to the team!

Members participate in Section 5 Agronomy Contest!

On Thursday, November 15th, Midland FFA members participated in the Section 5 Agronomy Contest. Members identified crop seeds, weed seeds, and insect slides as well as judged rings of grain samples. The team placed 6th overall. Members on the team included Ethan Koehler, Tyler McMahan, Cody Blunier, David Webber, Hans Vik, and Dan Scoon.



Members participate in Section Job Interview Contest!

Emily Bogner and Rachel Giosta participated in the Section 5 Job Interview Contest on November 8th. The members filled out a resume, participated in a phone and face-to-face interview, and then wrote a follow-up letter on sight. Emily Bogner placed 2nd overall and Rachel Giosta placed 3rd.

Members attend 1st ever Elite Conference!

Emily Bogner and Sam Dunphy were the two members from our chapter to attend the 1st ever Elite Conference. The conference was put on to promote students to enter into the field of agriculture education. About 50 students from all over Illinois attended the conference. Those attending heard from speakers from PAS and Ag in the Classroom, as well as got the chance to hear and speak to college representatives from ISU, SIUC, UoI, and WUI. At the end of the day, members broke into groups and taught a lesson to the rest of the group. The day was very informative. Emily and Sam brought home a lot of free stuff provided by FCAE and had a really great time!

Four members enter grain to compete in Grain Fair

Ethan Koehler, Jay Streitmatter, Tyler McMahan, and Emily Bogner all entered grain samples into the Section 5 FFA Grain Fair on Monday, November 5. All of the members did very well with their entries; everyone received A and B ratings.

FFA Plot Harvested!

The FFA Plot at the Middle School was harvested on Saturday, November 3rd. Samples from each seed type were taken to R and K, where they were weighed and moisture tested. Members helping out had a lot of fun, and it was a very successful day!

80th National Convention a huge success!

The trip to the 80th National FFA Convention was a fun and educational trip for all of the 16 members attending. Members took part in 4 tours including an elk farm, a honey farm, a dairy cattle farm, and the Indianapolis Speedway. Members also attended convention sessions and were able to watch some National CDE finalists in Parli Pro and Ag Issues. We also attended the Montgomery Gentry concert and two rodeos. Everyone had a great time!

Angus Heifers, Cows, and Bulls for Sale

Robbins Angus Farms in Fairfield will donate $100 to any chapter that has a student purchase an Angus Heifer, Cow, or Bull. This is a great opportunity to earn money for our chapter and start a good SAE project! See Mr. Blunier if you are interested.

October Meeting and Cookout

The October meeting was a cookout at the Bogner Farm on Monday, October 15th, 2007. Despite the slight rain, members enjoyed a great meal and had a lot of fun getting to know everyone and their families. 51 FFA members attended and there were 102 people there overall!

State Officer Visits Midland!

Wyatt McGrew, the Illinois FFA State Treasurer, paid a visit during 3rd hour on Friday, October 12th, 2007. He was accompanied by the Section President, Jake Knapp, the Section Secretary, Emily Bogner, and the Section Treasurer, Chrissy Irelan. Wyatt spoke to the members and also played fun games like "That's Me!" and "FFA Feud". All of the members had a great time getting to know their State Treasurer and Section Officers.

Greenhands Attend Orientation

The Midland Greenhands attended thier Greenhand Orientation in Eureka on Thursday, October 11th, 2007. The members enjoyed playing many different leadership games and getting to know all of the other Greenhands from around Section 5. The Orientation also was host to Wyatt McGrew, the Illinois FFA State Treasurer, who met with and talked to many members during the night.

Soils Judging Team Places 5th at State!

On Tuesday, October 9th, the Soils Judging team placed 5th at the State Invitational. There were 25 teams present. Katherine Girone placed in the top 10 individuals. The team included Jeremy Tkach, Jimmy Colwell, Katherine Girone, and Emily Bogner.

Fruit & Vegetable Judging Team Places 2nd!

The Fruit & Vegetable Judging Team placed 2nd at the Section Contest on Thursday, October 4, 2007.  The contest was held at Boggio's Orchard in Granville.  The contestants placed 8 classes of fruits and vegetables on quality, identified orchard and garden insects and diseases, identified orchard tools, identified fruit and vegetable varieties, and competed in an agronomic problem solving activity.  There were 10 teams competing and approximately 38 individuals.  Cody Blunier placed 9th overall and Katharine Girone placed 10th.  Other team members helping Midland to a 2nd place finish included Jeff Fandel, Coral Johnson, Sierra Lishman, Rachel Giosta, Joel Braun, and David Webber.  Congratulations!

Soils Judging Team Places 3rd at Section Contest

The Midland soils judging team placed 3rd in the Section Contest on Friday, September 28, 2007.  The contest was held near Brimfield and was very challenging.  Emily Bogner placed 3rd overall as an individual.  There were 9 teams competing and over 50 individuals.

FFA Meeting held September 25th
